In a ground tamper, rotary out-of-balance members 1, 3 are driven respectively from the crank-shaft 2 and cam-shaft 4 of an internalcombustion engine so that they rotate in opposite directions, couplings 5 being provided so that the drive to one rotary member may be disconnected when the drive to the other rotary member is effective to move the tamper in one direction, and vice versa to move the tamper in the other direction. Gearing 6 between the cam-shaft 4 and rotary member 3 is arranged to make the speeds of the rotary members the same. In a modification, a single rotary out-ofbalance member may be driven selectively in different directions by being selectively coupled to the crank-shaft or the cam-shaft. |
