[Also in Division G3] In an electrostatic precipitator, the frequency of flashovers is kept at a safe level and the formation of dangerous arcs is prevented by a control circuit which includes thyristors or controlled rectifiers and which is arranged to vary the magnetization current of a transductor in series with the A.C. supply to the precipitator. As shown, the ionisation chamber 4 of a precipitator is supplied from an A.C. source over a rectifier 3, a stepup transformer 2 and a transductor 1 which derives its magnetization current over a rectifier 7 and under the control of two thyristors 8. The firing angle of the thyristors is controlled by a pulse generator 9 responsive both to flashovers in the chamber 4, as detected by a transformer 6, an integrator 11 and an amplifier 10, and to excess current condition, resulting from the formation of an arc, as detected by a transformer 5 and the amplifier 10. The arrangement is such that the transductor 1 is automatically controlled to stabilize the operating conditions of the precipitator.</p> |
