[Also in Division F2] A selector valve for use in gas chromotography comprises a stationary member 4 having a flat seat with three flow ports 1, 3a, 3b at the comers of an equilateral triangle and a fourth port 2 equidistant from the other three, and a rotary valve disc 5 rotatable on the seat and having one channel 10 for interconnecting any two of the first three ports and a second channel 11 for interconnecting the fourth port and the remaining one of the first three ports. As applied in known manner to elution chromotography, a small volume of sample fluid is entrained in an inert carrier gas and directed in one position of the valve from the inlet 1 through a separating column connected at 3a, 3b, to the outlet 2. The column contains a partitioning agent which has different affinities for the various sample components so that they elute from the column at different times and are passed to a detector. In another position the high boiling components which normally take a long time to pass through the column, can be back-flushed from the entrance of the column by reversing the flow, or in the third position the column is by-passed. |
