A method for preparing electronic certificates, involves communicating the initial password and reference identification to a user, and then making a data transmission link between a user computer (22) and a read device (20). A data transmission link is formed between the user computer (22) and the central computer (12), and the reference identification and an official signature key are communicated to the central computer (12), and the reference identification and signature key are assigned to the passport stored in the central computer. The passport is checked by transmitting the encoded passport or a signature of a passport from a user computer to the central computer (12). The passport is verified by the central computer, especially via the official key, and a user-specific certificate is generated and transmitted to the user computer. |
