A fluorescent substance comprising a plurality of particles of (Y x ,Gd 1-x )BO 3 :Eu y (1.4 ‰ x < 0.9, 0 < y ‰ 0.3), wherein a half-band width in a profile of "charge amount vs. number distribution" of the particles measured by a charge amount distribution analyzer is 0.5 - 2.0 (fC/10 µm).
