The starter has a thermistor (12) and a glow ignitor, where the thermistor has high resistance at cold start, where the high resistance is transformed to low resistance by self-heating of the thermistor. A bimetal switch (14) interrupts an electrode heating circuit when the glow ignitor of a discharge lamp fails to ignite. The switch electrode and the thermistor are electrically and thermally connected with a mounting plate.
