In a process for the preparation of a phenol by pyrolytic oxidation and decarboxylation of a benzenemonocarboxylic acid (or its salt, ester or anhydride), particularly in the presence of a copper compound and with the aid of molecular oxygen and water vapour, unconverted carboxylic acid is recovered from the tarry byproduct by mixing the latter as it is formed or after formation with a condensed ring aromatic compound and extracting the mixture with a solvent for the acid, e.g. water. The examples relate to the recovery of benzoic acid, but also mentioned are o-, m- and p-toluic acids, m- and p-nitrobenzoic acids, p-chloro-p-methoxy- and p-phenyl-benzoic acids, and 2, 4-dimethylbenzoic acid. A number of suitable condensed ring aromatic compounds are specified; anthracene oil, creosote oil and mineral oil refining residues preferably boiling above 200 DEG C. may also be used. |
