The method involves supplying a volume flow from a pressure source (19) to a hydraulic actuating unit (2) during normal operation. The actuating unit is blocked in an instanteous position in case of failure of the pressure source and/or electric power supply. The blocking is manually removed during a standby operation such as dead condition, and the actuating unit is manually adjusted during the standby operation. An independent claim is also included for a hydraulic actuating device comprising a hydraulic cylinder.
