1,025,388. Jointing. LORD CORPORATION. Nov. 16, 1962 [Nov. 30, 1961], No. 43413/62. Heading B3V. [Also in Divisions F2 and H5] Joint-forming apparatus comprises a graphite resistance heating element enveloped in a normally solid, heat-activated adhesive. The adhesive may be a thermoplastic or thermosetting material, and the heating element may be left in the joint, particularly where future disassembly is contemplated, or may be withdrawn after use and while the adhesive is still fluid. As shown in Fig. 3, heating elements cut from graphite sheet material are connected in series and enveloped in a ring 47 of adhesive, for use in joining metal pipes together. If the substrates to be joined require different adhesives, the resistance may be enveloped in one adhesive and then coated on one side only with another adhesive. For joining metal members the graphite heating element may be coated with insulating material before being enveloped in the adhesive. |
