PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording write head capable of preventing magnetic saturation of a trailing shield notch and thereby sufficiently increasing the gradient of write magnetic field. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording write head has a write pole WP, a trailing shield TS with a trapezoidal notch, and a metal gap layer 150 between the write pole and the notch TSN. A rear end surface 42 of the write pole WP has a width which substantially defines a track width TW, faces a front end surface of the notch TSN, and is separated from the notch via the gap layer 150.
