PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of executing reading operations, without stopping the device, even when cooling fans become faulty. SOLUTION: Before starting the reading operation, the cooling fans 38a, 38b are driven and the state of them is investigated. A reading mode is selected, depending on the presence/absence of faults in the cooling fans 38a, 38b. Even if the cooling fans become faulty, the reading operation can be started. Moreover, during the reading operation, the state of the cooling fans 38a, 38b is investigated likewise, and the reading mode is changed, depending on the presence/absence of faults in the cooling fans 38a, 38b.
