PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric water heater capable of shortening a period of time for heating water without limit while avoiding power breaker operation. SOLUTION: This heater comprises: a heat retention control unit 8 for selecting either one of a first or second heat retention control temperature and controlling the energization of a heating means 5; a liquid addition detection means 9 for detecting whether or not the liquid has been added during the heat retention control at the second temperature; a power saving automatic control means 10 for performing heating control until the liquid boils when shifting the second heat retention control temperature to the first and the liquid addition has been detected then; a voltage fluctuation detection means 13 for detecting source voltage fluctuation while heating; a means 21 for determining a time for continuous current application time for determining the time for continuous current application of the heating means 5; and an avoidance control means 14 for controlling a rate of current application to the heating means 5. Heating control of the heating means 5 is made variable on the basis of detection information from the voltage fluctuation detection means 13. Thus, while the power breaker operation is avoided, the period of time for heating water can be shortened without limit, so that the heater can be efficient and more convenient.
