Methods and navigation devices are disclosed for map switching, involving receiving information relating to a current position (140) or determining a route to travel along; displaying map information including the current position or the determined route on a navigation device, determining whether the current position or a region along the determined route is covered by a relatively more detailed map; and switching the displayed map information to display the relatively more detailed map if corresponding map information of the current position or of the region along the route is available for display.
