PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen storage alloy having large hydrogen storage capacity and the long life, and to provide a nickel-hydride secondary battery using the hydrogen storage alloy. SOLUTION: The hydrogen storage alloy has a component composition expressed by the formula (1), (R<SB>1-x</SB>Mg<SB>x</SB>)(Ni<SB>1-y</SB>M<SB>y</SB>)<SB>z</SB>, wherein (R) represents La, Ce, Pr and Nd or a mixture thereof; (M) represents Co, Mn, Al, Cu, Fe, Zn, Si, Sn, B, C and Zr or a mixture thereof; and (x), (y) and (z) represent x of 0.05 to 0.30, y of 0 to 0.3 and z of 3.0 to 4.0 respectively: and includes a phase formed of crystal structures of a PuNi<SB>3</SB>type, a Ce<SB>2</SB>Ni<SB>7</SB>type and a Pr<SB>5</SB>Co<SB>19</SB>type so as to occupy 90 vol.% or higher in total.
