PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PTC element in which a deterioration of a PCT element assembly is thoroughly suppressed which has been subjected to a heat history after a long period of time has passed from the production thereof. SOLUTION: A PTC element 1 comprises a PTC element assembly 10, electrodes 12, 14 and a protective layer 20. The PTC element assembly 10 comprises a polymer matrix and conductive particles. The electrodes 12, 14 have first main surfaces 120, 140 joined to the PTC element assembly 10, and second main surfaces 121, 141 opposite to the first main surfaces 120, 140. The protective layer 20 covers the exposed surface 100 of the PTC element assembly 10. The exposed surface 100 refers to other surfaces than surfaces joined to the first main surfaces 120, 140 among the outer surfaces of the PTC element assembly 10. The protective layer 20 extends to the second main surfaces 121, 141, with provision that among the second main surfaces 121, 141, surfaces covered by the protective layer 20 are only peripheries in the near of the exposed surface 100 of the PTC element assembly 10.
