PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for suppressing sharp exotherm or the like and advancing reaction in a controlled state when industrially performing condensation reaction between an aromatic bis(halogenomethyl) compound and a phenol compound, and to obtain an aromatic dimethylene-phenol resin excellent in flame retardancy, oxidation resistance, heat resistance and the like and having good reproducibility and quality. SOLUTION: The production method comprises reacting (A) an aromatic bis(halogenomethyl) compound represented by the general formula (I): R-(CH<SB>2</SB>X)<SB>2</SB>with (B) a phenol compound represented by general formula (II), wherein (C) 0.01-2.50 mole equivalent of water is added to the compound of formula (I).
