PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector in which reductions in its weight and size are easily achieved and a contrast increase is ensured with an inexpensive dimming mechanism. SOLUTION: The diaphragm device 33 of an illuminating optical system 30 adjusts quantity of light by opening or closing a pair of intercepting plates 33a and 33b slid in the direction of X axis. Accordingly, the contrast of an image finally projected on a screen by a projection optical system 80 can be increased as necessity requires. In this case, the pair of intercepting plates 33a and 33b are slid in the direction of X axis such that they are laid lengthwise. This makes it possible to stably move a drive section, including the guide 33d of the diaphragm device 33, etc at relatively high accuracy. At this time, the drive section, including the guide 33d, etc., is restricted from projecting out in the direction Y.
