PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a processing time for reading a marksheet document, an original having a barcode, or an OCR sheet, and in addition, to reduce the number of times of erroneous reading of character information. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with an image reading means 107 for reading an original to generate a read image signal; a control unit 101 for designating a reading resolution; and an image processing unit 108 for applying predetermined image processing to the image signal read by the image reading means 107, and generating image data. This apparatus is provided with the control unit 101 capable of executing a first mode for allowing the image reading means 107 to read the original at the designated resolution, and the image processing unit 108 to execute image processing; and a second mode for allowing the image reading unit 107 to read a first original at a first resolution previously set, out of a plurality of originals, and to read a second original and thereafter at a second low resolution lower than the previously set first resolution, and allowing the image processing unit 108 to execute the image processing.
