PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handheld refractometer easily assembled. SOLUTION: The handheld refractometer comprises: a lens barrel; a base prism provided at a first end of the lens barrel, and having a known refraction index; an optical assembly provided within the lens barrel, and having a cylindrical optical chassis and an objective lens aligned along a predetermined optical axis by the cylindrical optical chassis; an optical assembly having an opened lens and a scale member with a scale for indicating a refraction index of a measured object contacting the base prism; and a base lens provided at a second end of the lens barrel. The optical chassis has an optical chassis side positioning section for circumferentially positioning the scale member relative to the optical chassis around the optical axis. The scale member has a scale member side positioning section for circumferentially positioning the scale member relative to the optical chassis around the optical axis by engaging the scale member with the optical chassis side positioning section.
