PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-modified carbon black having excellent dispersibility in a nonpolar solvent or a low-polar solvent, and large positive electrification properties, and to provide a dispersion thereof, and a method for producing the carbon black. SOLUTION: Provided is the surface-modified carbon black wherein a reactive functional group of a carbon black having a positive electrification-controlling material added thereto is reacted with one terminal isocyanate group of a diisocyanate compound having the isocyanate groups at both terminals or a triisocyanate compound having the isocyanate groups at three terminals of an iso structure, and the isocyanate groups at the other terminal of the diisocyanate compound or the two isocyanate groups at the other terminals of the triisocyanate compound are bound with a hydroxy-modified polymer. The method for producing the carbon black includes mixing the carbon black having the positive electrification-controlling material added thereto with purified water, drying and pulverizing the obtained mixture to attach the positive electrification-controlling material to the surface of carbon black particles, and reacting the resultant carbon black particles with a cyanate compound and the hydroxy-modified polymer in a nonreactive solvent.
