<p>An inspection device (700) for an optically complex surface is disclosed, comprising a near-infrared light source (702); light directing means (704) operable to direct the light to illuminate the optically complex surface, wherein the illumination is non-directional; and detection means (706) for detecting light incident from the optically complex surface. The inspection device may be used in particular to inspect carbon fibre composite materials, for example to identify gaps and other defects in carbon fibre plies laid down during construction of a carbon fibre structure. The device may also be used for in-situ inspection of carbon fibre and other optically complex material structures, such as aeroplane fuselages and the like.</p> |
