A separator for a battery is provided to produce a battery capable of ensuring a long life and high performances. A separator disposed inside a battery includes at least one first layer and at least one second layer, wherein the layers are formed of a nonwoven fabric material. The first layer comprises a fiber having an average diameter larger than that of the second layer fiber. The first layer comprises a fiber having an average diameter of 2 micron or larger, and the second layer comprises a fiber having an average diameter of 800 nm or smaller.
