A media access control device in a gigabit ethernet passive optical network is provided to allow an upper media access unit to transmit directly a data frame to a packet transmitter and a media access unit to receive directly a data frame from a packet receiving unit, to thus change a header or content of the data frame while processing at a gigabit speed. The first data conversion unit(202) converts an 8-bit data frame received from a communication provider network into a 16-bit or 32-bit data frame. An upper media access unit(203) receives the converted 16-bit or 32-bit data frame and transmits the same to a packet transmitting unit(204). The packet transmitting unit(204) transmits the data frame received from the upper media access unit(203) and a designated address of a memory(206) at which the data frame is to be stored to a memory controller(205), generates a frame pointer including the designated address, and transmits it to a transmission traffic management unit(207). The memory controller(205) stores the data frame in the memory by using the designated address received from the packet transmitting unit(204). The transmission traffic management unit(207) manages the frame pointer according to a pre-set traffic policy, and transmits it to a packet receiving unit(208) in a certain order. The packet receiving unit(208) receives the data frame corresponding to the frame pointer from the memory(206) via the memory controller(205) by using the received frame pointer. A media access unit(209) receives the data frame corresponding to the frame pointer from the packet receiving unit(208) and transmits it to the second data conversion unit(210). The second data conversion unit(210) converts the received data frame into the i-bit data frame and transmits it to a subscriber network. |
