PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a damage hidden under the material surface more precisely by leakage magnetic flux measurement without lowering sensitivity of an apparatus to a damage near the surface, concerning a device and a method for detecting a damage of the material or determining quantitatively such a damage. SOLUTION: A leakage magnetic flux measuring device for detecting a damage near the surface or separated from the surface of a ferromagnetic specimen 10 has at least one coil arranged horizontally or a core/coil assembly 24, 22 having a similar action, and at least one coil arranged vertically or core/coil assemblies 34, 32; 44, 42 having a similar action.
