The transmission includes a further primary input shaft (7) which can be connected to a variable-displacement hydraulic motor (6). In a gear for starting off, the hydraulic motor (6) is connected to this shaft. At the same time, the clutches (9, 11) for forward travel and for reverse travel are disengaged whilst the clutch used to make gearchanges is engaged. This latter clutch is able to change down to the maximum- or next largest gearing ratio.
