PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyarylene bearing a sulfonic group that exhibits excellent processability and methanol resistance.

SOLUTION: The polyarylene comprises a constituting unit (S) represented by general formula (2-2) and a constituting unit (T) represented by general formula (2-3), where the ratio s of the constituting unit (S) is 95-50 mol% and the ratio t of the constituting unit (T) is 5-50 mol% (provided that s+t=100 mol%). In the formulae, A' are each independently a bivalent linking group represented by -CO- or -SO2-, and R1-R4are each independently a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group or an aryl group.
