PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved functional element, especially, an improved organic electroluminescent element which have superior manufacturing adaptability, and in which a uniform in-plane output can be obtained, and to provide an especially improved organic electroluminescent element. SOLUTION: This is the functional element 1 in which on a substrate, a pair of electrodes 3, 4, a functional layer 11 which is pinched at least between the electrodes and in which an output varies in accordance with an impressed current, and terminals 3a, 3b for inputting the current to at least one of the electrodes are arranged, and the functional element has an insulating matter 12 included between the electrodes, in which density of the insulating matter is smaller in a part where a distance from the terminal is more remote, or which has a notched part in at least one of the electrodes, and in which an area ratio of the notched part to the electrode area becomes smaller according as the distance from the terminal becomes more remote.
