The present invention provides methods of preventing infection by retroviruses and methods of treatment of patients suffering from or susceptible to a viral infection. More particularly, the present invention provides methods of preventing viral infection and methods of treating retroviral infections which comprise the administration of at least one compound comprising N-4-(hydroxyphenyl)retinamide. Preferred methods of the invention are suitable for use in the treatment of patients who are HIV positive or are suffering from or are susceptible to AIDS.
