<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for feeding components provided with a convenient means for detecting the coupling part of a carrier tape for feeding the components to the component mounting apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In the vicinity of the coupling part 20 of the carrier tape 21, a part for identifying the coupling part 20, e.g. a cutting part 51, a protruding part 61, a bending part 62, a matting part or a bright part 95, is provided and detected by means of various sensors 50. The identifying part can be formed using a coupler 40 for coupling the carrier tapes 21 each other or a cutter 110 for cutting the carrier tapes 21 before being coupled without requiring any extra process. Alternatively, coupling of the carrier tapes 21 can be known by detecting the operation for replacing a reel 26 around which the carrier tape 21 is rolled.
