PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy while ensuring cooling performance and reliability of an engine, by devising a configuration of water jackets in a cylinder block and a cylinder head to efficiently reduce a heat load on the engine even with a low volume of cooling water. SOLUTION: The water jacket 15 of the cylinder block 1 is sectioned into an upper part 15a and a lower part 15b by a partition wall 16 and they are brought into communication with each other through block communication holes 15c. Communication holes 21a are formed in the cylinder head 2 for bringing the upper art 15a into communication with the water jacket 21 of the cylinder head 2. The communication holes 21a are provided near centers of cylinder bores in a cylinder row direction on an exhaust side of the cylinder bores 1a.
