PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for vapor-phase reaction with high productivity by which the cycle time in a continuous batch reaction process for bringing a powdery or a particulate reactant into contact with a reaction gas is shortened. SOLUTION: The method and apparatus for the vapor-phase reaction designed to repeat a series of operations to charge the powdery or particulate reactant supported on a holder 2 into a reaction chamber 30, introduce the reaction gas into the reaction chamber 30, carry out the vapor-phase reaction under heating and take out the resultant reaction product together with the holder 2 from the reaction chamber 30 in a continuous batch manner while successively feeding a new reactant are characterized as follows. The reaction chamber 30 is equipped with a pre-heating chamber 20 isolated through an openable and closable gate door 301a. The new reactant is subjected to a heat-up treatment in the pre-heating chamber 20 in parallel with the step of the vapor-phase reaction carried out in the reaction chamber 30.
