Solutions containing at least 25% by weight of cumene peroxide obtained from the acid hydrolysis of cumene hydroperoxide in admixture with cumene, and possibly side products of the oxidation of cumene by air or molecular oxygen, are neutralised by passing over an anion exchange resin, preferably phenolic-base resins having a secondary amino or tertiary amino functional group. A fixed bed of resin in a column is employed. The resin is first brought to its hydroxyl state by washing with dilute NaOH, and then with distilled water, to remove excess NaOH. When the water retained by the resin has been fully displaced by acetone the supply of acidic hydrolysate is started, and stopped when the resin is spent. The residual partly neutralised hydrolysate in the resin is displaced by acetone and added to the acidic hydrolysate to be neutralised in the next run. Upon completion of this displacement, the acetone is displaced in turn by distilled water and the resin then regenerated using NaOH solution. The cycle can then be repeated. In modifications of the process, after regenerating the resin with NaOH and washing with water, instead of displacing the water with acetone, the water is discharged by draining. Water absorbed by the resin is removed with warm air and the supply of acid hydrolysate then started. Upon completion of the cycle, instead of displacing the partly neutralised hydrolysate with acetone, the mixture is drained from the resin with the assistance of compressed air. The resin is then washed by flooding it from the bottom with acetone and subsequently water. Washing with water and regeneration are carried out as before. In examples "Duolite" A7 and A2 resins (Registered Trade Marks) are utilised in the process and its modifications to neutralise a phenol/acetone mixture containing about 22% of a mixture of cumene and side-products and 0.2% sulphuric acid.
