PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical sensor and an object detection method capable of preventing wrong actuation caused by background radiation. SOLUTION: The optical sensor 10 includes a short-wavelength light-receiving part 1 and a long-wavelength light-receiving part 2. A field of view F of each of the light-receiving parts 1, 2 is formed so as to receive radiation from the same area. The short-wavelength light-receiving part 1 detects only the light, having a wavelength region not longer than the wavelength emitted from an object 5 to be detected. It is designed so that the long-wavelength light-receiving part 2 can detect at least the radiation emitted from the object 5 to be detected. Output signals of the respective light-receiving parts 1, 2 are processed by a signal processing circuit 3, to determine whether the object 5 to be detected has entered the field of view F of both the light-receiving parts 1, 2. When the object 5 to be detected covers the field of view F to shield the background radiation, it is determined that the object 5 to be detected has approached. Accordingly, the misoperation of the sensor due to two the high-energy background radiation, and the object 5 to be detected can be detected more accurately. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
