PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which is allowed to shift to glow discharge, without having to turn off a discharge lamp, and can attain high contrast, improvement in reproduction of color and elimination of noise. SOLUTION: When a color wheel rotates to a prescribed position, a signal output section 21 outputs a detection signal. A voltage elevating/lowering converter 31 elevates and lowers the voltage from a power source for supplying the voltage to a lamp 4. A controller 50 controls the voltage-elevating/lowering converter 31 with a constant current so as to turn into a current which causes glow discharge to the lamp 4, when the detection signal is outputted from the signal output section 21.
