PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector having a mechanism for automatically adjusting the luminance of a projection light using a simple device, without requiring a means for receiving light reflected from a projecting face. SOLUTION: A focus lens position detecting section 21 detects the rotation angle of a focus lens as a focus lens position and outputs the detected rotation angle to an arithmetic operation section 23. The arithmetic operation section 23 reads a correlation table, showing a correlation between each focus lens position corresponding optimum luminance which are stored in a data recording device 22; and the arithmetic operation section 23 then calculates the optimum luminance from the focus lens position and outputs the result to an image control section 24. The image control section 24 controls input video information so that the optimum luminance is obtained, with respect to the current luminance of a luminous flux from a light source 11 and outputs the thus controlled video information to an image forming element 13. The image forming element 13 projects the video, adjusted to be at optimal luminance, onto a screen 40 from an optical engine 12 via a projection lens 14. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
