<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the periphery monitoring device of a vehicle for highly reliably and easily judging whether the classification of an object extracted from the pickup image of an imaging apparatus is a living body such as a person. <P>SOLUTION: An object such as a person is extracted from the pickup images of imaging apparatus 2R and 2L, and the height of the degree of symmetry in the vertical direction of the object is judged (STEP 33). The object whose symmetrical degree is judged to be high, is judged as any classification other than a living body (STEP 33a). The object whose symmetrical degree is judged to be low, is judged as a living body with high possibility (STEP 33b).
