PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition and coating for cans excellent in T-bend bending processability, processed-part corrosion resistance, residual-film resistance, retort-whitening resistance, flavor properties, hygiene, and adhesion. SOLUTION: In the water-based coating composition, an acrylic-modified epoxy resin (A) obtained by reacting an epoxy resin (a) with a carboxy group-containing acrylic resin (b) is neutralized and dispersed in an aqueous medium. The epoxy resin (a) consists of an epoxy resin (a1) having an epoxy equivalent of less than 5,000 and an epoxy resin (a2) having an epoxy equivalent of 5,000 or more. The carboxy group-containing acrylic resin (b) consists of a carboxy group-containing acrylic resin (b1) having a glass transition temperature of 0-100°C and an acid value of 160-400 mg KOH/g and a carboxy group-containing acrylic resin (b2) having a glass transition temperature of -20 to 40°C and an acid value of 5-150 mg KOH/g.
