In a bread slicing machine, loaves 152 are fed along an infeed table 150 and in sliding contact with a top guide plate 154 by means of flights 66 on an endless conveyer 64 to be urged by the flights 66 into parallel, forwardly inclined, slicing blades 29, the loaves 152 passing on to a delivery table 155 beyond the blades 29 and aligned with the infeed table 150 and being held down by a roller 141 on the delivery table 155 along which the loaves are further urged by flights 84 on an endless conveyer 79 through the slicing blades 29. The blades 29 comprise endless bandsaws guided around rotary drums (not shown) to form a distorted figure of 8, the runs 29a, 29b of the blades 29 being arranged to intersect within the path of the loaves, the downward run 29a being inclined at a smaller angle to the feed path than the upward run 29b and the inclination of the blades 29a, 29b to the feed path being preferably less than 30 degrees.
