A MOS type solid-state image pickup device of the present invention is composed of: a pixel unit (110) which includes image pickup elements arranged two-dimensionally; a readout shift register (111); an electronic shutter shift register (112); a signal processing unit (113) which extracts a pixel signal from the selected pixel; a horizontal shift register (114) which outputs a column selection signal; and an amplifier circuit (115) which amplifies the extracted pixel output signal. Each of the shift registers (111) and (112) has a function of generating a dummy pulse during a blanking period. When the blanking period occurs after the completion of scanning up to the last line, a selection signal is outputted alternately to the last line (m) and the second-from-the-last line (m-1) of the shift register.
