A negative electrode active material for a mercury-free air zinc battery, and a mercury-free air zinc battery containing the negative electrode active material are provided to suppress the generation of hydrogen without the deterioration of battery performance even by using no mercury, thereby preventing the leakage of solution. A negative electrode active material comprises zinc as a main component; 100-300 ppm of indium; 100-150 ppm of bismuth; and 30 ppm or less of lead. Preferably at least 95 wt% of zinc has various particle size in a range of 75-381 micrometers. Preferably the negative electrode active material comprises further 0-10 ppm of iron, copper, nickel, aluminum, cadmium, molybdenum, cobalt or antimony. |
