A display device and a method for controlling the same are provided to edit a record to the desired style of a user by selectively encoding a partial section of the record. An input unit(108) selects a partial section to be encoded from all sections of a record. A recording encoding unit(109) encodes the selected partial section of the record. A controller(111) stores data for the encoded partial section of the record in an internal memory or an external memory. A display unit(105) displays all the sections of the record in a progress bar type or a watch type. The recording encoding unit(109) connects two or more partial sections discontinued when performing the encoding.
