A first module is continuously in contact with remote detection modules via a wireless link in order to send and receive reports, allowing a local exchange network to be set up which can signal any change in the status of the remote modules due to a theft attempt. The first module has its own transmission apparatus which makes use of an existing GSM network to inform the vehicle owner of any change in status via their mobile phone, e.g. by text message (SMS). The apparatus also allows the owner to send and receive instructions by mobile phone.
