An external connection interface emulation device of a portable terminal and a method are provided to connect communication links between an external interface and a network modem chip embedded in the terminal in software manner, thereby using the terminal as a USB(Universal Serial Bus) modem of another portable terminal. A network modem forms a communication link with a wireless communication system, and supports a communication service in a communication way supported by the wireless communication system. A controller emulates the network modem of a portable terminal as a portable terminal modem or an external interface modem of an external device according to a signal inputted from the external device.
