In a dual fuel engine a centrifugal or other governor 19 controls the gas valve 12 and injection pump control rod 16 through a floating lever 22 which is also connected at 25 to a piston 27 controlled by the gas pressure in chamber 29 and air intake manifold pressure in chamber 30. During normal running on gas with pilot fuel injection, the gas pressure in chamber 29 moves piston 27 to the left and the governor 19 moves the gas valve 12 through rods 38, 40, over the normal gas supply range 0-100 on scale 40b. During this operation, the fuel pump rack 15 is held against the pilot fuel stop 18 and its governor operated rod 24 moves freely within the lost-motion space 33. If the gas supply fails or is insufficient for the load on the engine, the intake manifold pressure forces piston 27 to the right, whereby lever 22 moves rods 38 and 24 beyond the fully opened position of valve 12 so that rod 24 contacts rack 16 and increases the liquid fuel delivery to supplement or replace the gas supply. The gas pipe 36 has a constant pressure valve 43 therein which normally maintains the gas at a pressure slightly above the maximum air intake manifold pressure. A shut-off cock 50 in the gas supply pipe 48 is connected to the engine control lever 51 which regulates the speed setting of the governor. The cock 50 is closed in the shut-off position S of lever 51 and open in the normal running range A to B. Lever 51 is connected to pivot 21 of lever 22 and through a spring 56 to the governor setting lever 55. The air and gas supplies to the cylinder are controlled by coaxial mixing valves 3, 5, operated by rocker mechanism 9, the valve 5 being actuated by an abutment 7 on the stem of valve 3.
