[Also in Division F2] A self-staking device, such as a self-staking nut, for securing to a plate P, comprises an annular guide portion 12 adapted to fit closely into a reception aperture in the plate, and a larger diameter staking portion 14 with alternate staking teeth 22 and lands providing stopsurfaces 28 which limit the penetration of the teeth into the plate. The teeth 22 have hardened points 26 which, upon pressure being applied to the nut, penetrate into the plate and deform the metal thereof in the directions F into an annular groove 20. The alternate lands and teeth prevent turning of the nut in the plate. In another embodiment, Figs. 8-10 (not shown), the stop surfaces 28 extend outwardly of the teeth. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, a stake nut has a nut barrel 31 supported with clearance within a groove 36 of the staking portion 14 to allow self-alignment of the barrel. The invention may also be applied to staking a bolt, rivet, bush or grommet into a plate.
