PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cartridge housing many stacked sheet optical disks set in a tray, and a method for detecting a tray position. SOLUTION: A cartridge 23 is provided with a side plate 31, a top plate 32, a bottom plate 33, and a back plate 34. A groove 35 is formed in the side plate 31 to insert a partition plate 13. In a space defined by the partition plate 13, a tray carrying an optical disk and a separator for preventing associative conveying of the tray are alternately stacked. A slit plate 36 having a slit 37 of a pitch equal to the groove 35 is aligned with the groove 35 to be attached to the back plate 34. The slit 37 is detected by a transmissive type optical sensor, the position of the partition plate 13 is detected, and then the cartridge is moved by an amount equal to thicknesses of the tray and the separator to pull out the tray.
