It is possible to provide an image display device capable of reducing the image search time and suppressing the data amount transmitted for search and to provide a method for controlling the device. The image display device (4) is connected via a communication line to an NW camera (1) for distributing an image and a recorder (3) for accumulating the distributed image and displays the distributed image on an image display unit (43). The image display device (4) includes: a data communication unit (41) for receiving image data from the NW camera (1); an image display control unit (42) for decoding the received data, subjecting data to image processing, and outputting the data to the image display unit (43); a thumbnail managing unit (44) for judging whether the received data is image data satisfying a predetermined condition as a thumbnail display object; and a thumbnail accumulation unit (45) for accumulating only the image data which has been judged to satisfy the condition by the thumbnail managing unit (44).
