TRACKING ERROR SIGNAL GENERATING APPARATUS AND METHOD THEREOF

A device and a method for generating a tracking error signal are provided to produce the tracking error signal accurately even if a noise is added and to improve stability of an optical disc driver against the noise. A device for generating a tracking error signal comprises an N-division light receiving element(501), a phase difference signal detecting unit(502), a pulse width modulation unit(503), and a difference detecting unit(504). The N -division light receiving element receives the light reflected from a disc loaded on an optical disc driver. The phase difference signal detecting unit detects a plurality of phase difference signals by using a signal output from the N-division light receiving element. The pulse width modulation unit modulates the pulse width of the phase difference signals to increase the pulse width of the plural phase difference signals separately. The difference detecting unit detects the difference between the modulated phase difference signals, and outputs the difference as a tracking error signal. In the N-division light receiving element, N is a positive number over 2.
