A display panel driving apparatus generates, based on an input gray scale, the gray scale of a first subframe and the gray scale of a second subframe that is higher than the gray scale of the first subframe so that the input gray scale can be displayed by use of a sum of the displays corresponding to the respective first and second subframes to which one frame is divided. In this display panel driving apparatus, for a response in which the input gray scale of the subsequent frame is higher than the input gray scale of the preceding frame and further equal to or higher than a first threshold gray scale, the gray scale of the first subframe in the subsequent frame is set to be equal to or lower than a second threshold gray scale independently of the input gray scale of the subsequent frame. In this way, the jaggy of the edge of a moving image can be reduced in the time division drive.
