<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline battery capable of surely suppressing an internal short circuit caused by growth of dendrites of zinc oxide even when the amount of sodium remained in electrolytic manganese dioxide used for a positive active material is much, and having high reliability. <P>SOLUTION: The alkaline battery is equipped with a positive electrode containing electrolytic manganese dioxide, a negative electrode containing zinc or zinc alloy, a separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an alkaline electrolyte. Sodium of 0.1-0.7 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. electrolytic manganese dioxide and silicon of 0.005-0.05 pts.wt.
